Tips for keeping your cat cool on hot days

Temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius have been measured in Finland for 20 days in a row this summer (31.7.2025 https://yle.fi/a/74-20175254). Finnish summers are getting hotter every year and the heatwaves are getting longer. That's why it's worth taking your cat's cooling seriously in the summer. Our pets suffer in the heat just like us humans.

How to make your cat feel better on hot days

1. Stay hydrated

It is important for your cat to drink enough water. You can offer water in several cups around the house. Wet food or adding water to dry food also helps.

2. Provide cool places

Keep curtains or blinds closed during the hottest hours of the day. Open windows a crack on cool nights or mornings. If the sun shines on your home, make sure there are shady spots available.

3. Utilize cooling devices and supplies

Air coolers and fans make your cat feel more comfortable. There are also cooling pads and cooling scarves, often marketed for dogs, on the market.

4. Water cools

If your cat tolerates it, you can wet your hands with cool water and stroke their fur. Alternatively, you can place a damp towel on your cat or brush their fur with a cool, damp brush.
